Rediscovering Muay Thai
Page 4 - Moving Meditation
In Villalobos' ancient Muay Thai School, two kinds of meditation are practiced daily. The first one is moving meditation; the practitioner needs to keep his mind (his attention) inside of himself, in the center of the body, while he does practices Muay Thai.
Villalobos explains “When we put our attention inside in the center our body (between the solar plexus and the belly button or navel), the body saves a lot of energy and ones awareness is increased. This technique also helps to keep you relaxed when you are faced with the kind of external pressures everyone faces during a confrontational situation.
Villalobos relates “A few weeks ago I had a sparring session with an experienced fighter that came to see my style of teaching. We sparred for about 45 minutes and during this time I kept my mind in the center of my body. While I was interchanging techniques with him, I had one of the most amazing feelings ever, my surroundings suddenly stopped, noise disappeared and everything around me was completely calm and quiet. My body was so relaxed that I was consciously listening to my own breathing and heartbeat. While he was attacking me I saw everything slowly, almost like I was having a dream”.
“After a while we stopped, and although my body was physically tired, my mind was very clear and calm, and for the rest of the day I felt very relaxed” says Villalobos.
This is a clear example of how meditation helps with body coordination.
