Training with the Thai's
Page 3 - Evenings at the Camps
In the evening the fighters usually walk around the neighborhood.
They
often walk together. They go to the grocery store and other public places.
"They try to meet girls and make friends but that is hard to do in
the few free minutes given to the fighters each day. They don't have time
for anything," Villalobos remembers. Most of the guys are home by
9 or 9:30. The doors close at 10:30.
"The trainers expect you to be home on time. You must be back before the 10:30 curfew or you are in big trouble." Villalobos shakes his head and laughs. "I know about this. I missed the curfew more than one time and man, you don't want to do this." Thai camp is no picnic. It is serious training and serious business from everyone's point of view. Fighters live at the camp and follow a code of conduct that is steeped in hundreds of years of cultural tradition. "No women are allowed inside," Villalobos says. It is an insult to bring a woman inside the camp. The lifestyle of the typical fighter is spartan and austere. It's all about training and preparation for the next fight.
